Medscapes is a landscaping company working in Pinellas County, Florida, in Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Palm Harbor. We design and install planting beds, new sod, paver patios and walkways, landscape lighting and drainage, and offer full-service maintenance on 40-week and 50-week plans. Pinellas yards sit closer to the Gulf and in warmer zones than our inland work, so plant and grass choices are made for that. Doug Wilson, our Director of Operations, walks every yard and writes every quote himself.

Pinellas County
Where we work in Pinellas County
Pinellas is a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf, and it is warmer than the inland towns we cover. Clearwater sits in USDA hardiness zone 10a and downtown St. Petersburg in 10b, so frost is less of a limit and salt and wind matter more.
- Clearwater
- Zone 10a on the Gulf side, where the city's own water rules apply to city water customers.
- St. Petersburg
- Zone 10b at the south end of the county, the warmest area we work in, on city water rules for city customers.
- Palm Harbor
- North Pinellas, where many homes are on Pinellas County Utilities water and its own watering days.

Pinellas County watering days: it depends on your water supplier
As of October 2026, Pinellas is under the Southwest Florida Water Management District's water shortage order, which runs through March 31, 2027, and lawns get one watering day a week. Which day depends on who supplies your water.
Pinellas County Utilities customers do not use the District's Monday to Friday address table. Their day is set by address and by which side of State Road 580 the home is on:
| Location | Even address | Odd address |
|---|---|---|
| North of SR 580 | Saturday | Wednesday |
| South of SR 580 | Tuesday | Thursday |
Sprinklers may run from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. or from 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on that day. Pinellas County issues citations, and the amount doubles with each repeat. Customers of city water systems, including St. Petersburg and Clearwater, follow their own supplier's schedule; the name on your water bill tells you which rules apply.

Planting a coastal Pinellas yard
Salt spray and sandy soil narrow the choices near the water. UF/IFAS rates St. Augustine good for salt tolerance and Bahia very poor, and rates zoysia and Bermuda excellent in drought. We install St. Augustine, zoysia and Bermuda, and Doug picks the grass for your exposure, shade and use.
Pinellas County bans nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer, and the sale of it, from June 1 through September 30, and keeps a 10-foot fertilizer-free zone along water. Medscapes does not apply fertilizer or pesticides; for those, use an FDACS-licensed provider.
Florida law bars an HOA from prohibiting Florida-friendly landscaping, which suits low-water beds near the coast. Artificial turf is different: an HOA can still restrict it in a front yard.

Questions about landscaping in Pinellas County
Not answered here? Call (813) 382-5801 or book a free on-site estimate.
Which Pinellas County cities does Medscapes work in?
Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Palm Harbor. For another Pinellas address, call (813) 382-5801 or send the form and we will tell you whether we can take the job.
Why are my Pinellas watering days different from Hillsborough's?
Pinellas County Utilities sets its own days by address and by State Road 580 instead of using the District's Monday to Friday table. North of SR 580, even addresses water Saturday and odd Wednesday; south of it, even Tuesday and odd Thursday, as of October 2026.
I'm on St. Petersburg or Clearwater city water. Which rules apply?
Your city supplier's. City water customers follow their own supplier's schedule within the District order, so check the utility named on your water bill.
Can I grow more tropical plants in Pinellas than inland?
Often, yes. Clearwater is in USDA hardiness zone 10a and downtown St. Petersburg in 10b, warmer than the 9b of Wesley Chapel and Lutz, so cold-tender plants have a better chance. Salt exposure near the water still narrows the list.
What is the best grass for a yard near the water?
Salt tolerance comes first. UF/IFAS rates St. Augustine good for salt and Bahia very poor. We install St. Augustine, zoysia and Bermuda, and choose by salt exposure, shade and how the lawn is used.
Can my HOA stop me from installing artificial turf?
It can restrict it, especially in a front yard. State law limits what cities and counties may ban, but HOA rules still apply, so check with the board first.
